Vusumuzi Zulu remembers the first time he met Nothando. It was 1968. He was having an after-work drink at a bar in downtown Minneapolis when she walked in with a mutual friend. White miniskirt, tall go-go boots, and “this beautiful smile.”After some conversation, they parted ways — she left in a Chrysler convertible, he recalled — and he was worried he wouldn’t see her again. Until, that is, a few weeks later when she showed up, unannounced, at the community center where he worked. A coworker literally had to carry him outside to prove to him that she’d returned.“And there she was,” Vusumuzi said. “Beautiful. Beautiful. Wow. That’s what I said: ‘Wow. Girl, where you been!’”They kept talking, went on more dates, and soon married. All told, the two master storytellers were together 55 years.Nothando Zulu, the cofounder and president of the Black Storytellers Alliance, died Sept. 11. She was 78.The energy and power behind Nothando’s celebrated storytelling came from her own life, Vusumuz...Albany airport hosts Fear of Flying class

Frank Clark says: “This is going to be a season of grit. We’re going to have to take some (bleep).”

How low can the Broncos go? I fear there is no bottom, because this team has no foundation of strong leadership to stand on.The worst part of surrendering 70 points was how the Broncos quit on themselves. At 0-3, the players in Denver’s locker room are no longer playoff contenders, but a punch line. And make no mistake, they hear the abuse that results from giving up 10 touchdowns in a single game.“That noise is real loud. You’re going to hear it. But it’s about what you retain,” Broncos edge-rusher Frank Clark told me Thursday.“If you hear the noise, they’re telling you: ‘Oh, man, you suck. You’re (crappy) at your job. Broncos this, Broncos that.’ If we really listened to all that, would we really call them fans?”Clark, sidelined by a hip abductor muscle injury, had to stand by with the rest of us and watch as Denver get clowned by the Dolphins in a 70-20 loss.It seems highly unlikely Clark will be able to return to the field Sunday in Chicago to bolster a pass rush that has produc...Driver accused of hitting two parole officers in Colorado Springs is captured

Gas prices in Southern California continue to climb and now Los Angeles County inspectors are checking to make sure that customers are paying for what they’re getting at the pump. Gas prices jumped 12 cents overnight and the average price in L.A. County as of Thursday is $6.28. This is the 22nd time in 24 days that the average price for a gallon of gas has risen. Compared to the national average of $3.83 for a gallon of gas, California is paving the way for some of the highest rates to date. Many residents are discouraged and frustrated by the fluctuating gas prices. “Because of the gas prices, I’m actually not going to do my next 2 stops and I’d rather do calls,” said Long Beach resident Emma Haines, who works in sales and drives all over L.A. County. Haines says she fills up her tank every day with $20 hoping that the high prices eventually drop. Today she decided to shorten her route due to the high gas prices.
