DENVER (AP) — Jamal Murray scored 40 points and Michael Porter Jr. had 13 of his 16 in the fourth quarter, powering the Denver Nuggets past the Minnesota Timberwolves 122-113 on Wednesday night for a 2-0 lead in the NBA playoff series.Nikola Jokic added 27 points, nine assists and nine rebounds for the Nuggets, who blew an early 21-point lead and trailed 89-87 heading into the fourth quarter.Anthony Edwards had 41 points for the Wolves, who shot a sizzling 81% in the third quarter to erase a 64-59 halftime deficit.Minnesota had shot just 39% in the first half, just slightly better than it did in a 29-point loss in the series opener Sunday night.“They shot 80% in the third quarter — 80%!” Denver coach Michael Malone fumed on TNT after watching the Timberwolves make 17 of 21 shots. “So, we didn't play any defense. That's what happened!”The series shifts to Minneapolis for Game 3 on Friday night. The Nuggets recovered during a thrilling fourth quarter that began with Porter sc...Low tech makes cleaner water in Iowa; so what’s stopping it?

SLATER, Iowa (AP) — Nick Helland’s central Iowa farm looks much like every other nearby farm on this chilly March day, with corn stubble stretching from a gravel road up over a low hill to the northern horizon. But look closely, and you can see patches of muddy ground where a few months ago crews buried low-tech systems called bioreactors and streamside buffers that filter fertilizer-borne nitrates from water as it drains from Helland’s field into nearby Big Creek and eventually the Des Moines River. The underground devices work. The question is whether one Iowa county’s promising new approach to an old problem can be expanded enough to finally address nitrate pollution that, for years, has endangered drinking water, made more than half the state’s waterways unfit for fish or humans, and fueled a giant dead zone nearly 1,000 miles away in the Gulf of Mexico.Polk County is doing it by making it painless for farmers — handling all the logistics and arrangements for the syste...Warm Front To Swing Through And Pump Warm Air Into The Area—But Markedly Cooler Pattern For The Weekend

Three-letter chants have been commonplace at Ball Arena this season, only this one sounded different.“M-P-J” boomed throughout the lower bowl in the fourth quarter of Wednesday night’s tense Game 2 playoff game in homage to Denver’s supremely talented sniper. Michael Porter Jr. dashed Minnesota’s hopes with an enthralling 13-point fourth quarter as the Nuggets survived, 122-113.Though Porter came alive in the fourth, Game 2 was Jamal Murray’s show. Without his stunning 40-point night, the Nuggets don’t head to Minnesota for Friday’s Game 3 up 2-0. Murray carved up the T-Wolves’ backcourt with six 3-point daggers and even more devastating dribble penetration as he went 13 of 22 from the field.“The kid is a warrior,” Nuggets coach Michael Malone said, joking they’d need to carry Murray onto the plane to Minnesota after playing 39 minutes. If Game 1 was a reminder of Murray’s playoff credentials, Game 2 was a time capsule to his scoring eruptions in the Bubble.By...Southern California woman with stage 4 ovarian cancer hopes to check off bucket list

The bond they felt, however, was immediate and they’ve been together ever since. The couple had dreams of becoming parents, but with Marlisse’s terminal diagnosis, the couple is now focused on enjoying the time they have left together to see the world and make memories.“Marlisse and I are devastated that we won’t become parents, especially since she was able to freeze her eggs prior to her diagnosis,” said Brock. “But time is no longer on our side. She wants to be well enough to care for our baby and be around to raise our child. But this is not in the cards for us. So we’ve decided to channel all of our energy into spending the time we have left focused on joy!”Two years ago, Ma...Oilers beat Kings 4-2 in Game 2 to tie first-round series

OAKLAND — In the wake of an apparent accord on a land purchase in Las Vegas by the Oakland Athletics, Mayor Sheng Thao said Wednesday night that she will cease negotiations with team leadership on the city’s Howard Terminal site.Reporting by this news organization had indicated as recently as last month that the clock was ticking on time to finalize a deal that both the city and the team could live with, but a Las Vegas Review-Journal report Wednesday night saying that the team has reached a binding purchase agreement on a 49-acre site near the Las Vegas Strip appears to show that time has finally run out.The A’s are mired in one of the worst starts in team history. They have lost the first six series in a season for the first time ever, stretching back to the 1901 Philadelphia Athletics. After losing Wednesday to the Cubs, their seventh straight loss, the A’s dropped to 3-16, the worst record in baseball.Over the past two off-seasons, they have nearly completed a full teardown of a...Man dies after being pulled from surf in Pacifica

CONCORD — There is no denying Alec Blair’s talent on a basketball court. In his first two high school seasons, the 6-foot-5 sophomore led De La Salle to consecutive appearances in the North Coast Section Open Division final and Open Division state playoffs, receiving all-area honors along the way.But even as he flourished on the hardwood, there was always a question about the basketball star.Isn’t he good at baseball, too?For those who weren’t sure, Blair peeled back the curtain Wednesday against Granada.Batting from the left side, he smashed a tape-measure shot over De La Salle’s right-field fence in the fourth inning to tie the score. Two innings later, with two out and the score still deadlocked, Blair launched another no-doubt-about-it homer to right that lifted the Spartans to a 2-1 victory in a matchup between the East Bay Athletic League’s hottest teams.“It felt pretty good,” said Blair, the Spartans’ center fielder. “...Latest news
