NEW YORK (AP) — In 2022, doctors recorded the first confirmed case of tick-borne encephalitis virus acquired in the United Kingdom. It began with a bike ride.A 50-year-old man was mountain biking in the North Yorkshire Moors, a national park in England known for its vast expanses of woodland and purple heather. At some point on his ride, at least one black-legged tick burrowed into his skin. Five days later, the mountain biker developed symptoms commonly associated with a viral infection — fatigue, muscle pain, fever. At first, he seemed to be on the mend, but about a week later, he started to lose coordination. An MRI scan revealed he had developed encephalitis, or swelling of the brain. He had been infected with tick-borne encephalitis, or TBE, a potentially deadly disease that experts say is spreading into new regions due in large part to global warming.___EDITOR’S NOTE: This story is part of a collaboration between The Associated Press and Grist exploring the intersectio...Howie Carr: Bad week for Biden Inc.

With all of Hunter Biden’s problems with the law, it’s been a very bad week for Dementia Joe.But on Tuesday the president announced one incredible triumph that had gone completely unnoticed until now.“We ended cancer as we know it.”That’s an exact quote, by the way. Here’s the entire context, from a press briefing at the White House. Dementia Joe explained how he gets asked questions, like this one.“If you could do anything at all Joe what you do? I said I’d cure cancer. And they looked at me like, ‘Why cancer?’ Because no one thinks we can, that’s why. And we can. We ended cancer as we know it.”Amazing! Who knew?Sadly, the official White House transcript misquoted the Big Guy. Joe’s caregivers took his actual words, “We ended cancer as we know it,” and falsely changed them to something he did not say: “We can end cancer as we know it.”This was at the same press briefing where Brandon announced yet another downward revision in the nation’s phony-baloney COVID death statistics. Legendary players deserve a place in the HallOceanside, L.I.: To Voicer Vinny Armiento, who wonders why the Yankees never had a day to honor Graig Nettles: I totally agree with you. He was possibly the best third baseman in Yankee history, drug cheat Alex Rodriguez included. But I’ll tell you why they never honored him: Because he wasn’t afraid to hide his disdain for George Steinbrenner. So, George refused to retire his number and give him his day (Number 9 was retired for Roger Maris). Check out the end of the Yankees win over Boston in the Bucky Dent game. Nettles makes the catch, and after celebrating with his teammates on the field, he runs right past George — who clearly wanted his attention — into the dugout. That was no accident.Meanwhile, although I find Fred McGriff deserving of the Hall of Fame honor, it bothers me to no end that Don Mattingly can’t get in because he supposedly didn’t have enough good years. FOXBORO — Josh Uche understands the game outside the game.Whether he plays in New England past this season, a contract year for the talented 24-year-old pass rusher, is closely tied to his performance on the football field. But not entirely. The Patriots’ ongoing negotiations with his agents will be impacted by several factors: his contract demands, the team’s interest, how pass rushers of his age and caliber are being paid across the league, salary cap projections, the opportunity cost of signing Uche to a large contract for the team, potential replacements for him on the roster, how the front office projects he’ll play in upcoming years, what Uche believes he’ll do and which side can best flexSo, with all of that in mind, Uche is choosing to keep a clear head. The business game? His agents can handle that. Football is the only game he wants to play.“I just let (my agents) handle all the little stuff and just come out here and work each day,” Uche...Patriots’ JuJu Smith-Schuster indirectly compares Mac Jones to QB greats

NIAMEY, Niger (AP) — Various factions of Niger’s military wrangled for power Friday, an analyst and a Western military official said, two days after members of the presidential guard staged a coup, setting off political chaos that could set back the country’s fight against jihadists and increase Russia’s influence in West Africa. It remained unclear who was in charge, and if efforts at mediation had begun. A delegation from neighboring Nigeria left shortly after arriving, and the president of Benin, nominated as a mediator by a regional body, had not arrived. An analyst who has spoken with participants in the talks said that the Presidential Guard, which led the coup, is negotiating with the army about who should be in charge. The analyst asked not to be named because of the sensitive situation.A western military official in Niger who is not authorized to speak to the media confirmed that the military factions were believed to be negotiating, and said that situation remains tense and ...Adidas to release second batch of Yeezy sneakers after breakup with Ye

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — Adidas said Friday that it is releasing a second batch of high-end Yeezy sneakers after cutting ties with rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, as the German sportswear brand seeks to unload the unsold shoes while donating to groups fighting antisemitism. The online sale, to start Wednesday through Adidas smartphone apps and its website, follows an earlier set of sales in May. Models that will be available include the Yeezy Boost 350 V2, 500, and 700 as well as the Yeezy Slide and Foam RNR. The company cut ties with Ye in October after he made antisemitic and other offensive remarks online and in interviews. That left Adidas holding 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) worth of unsold Yeezys and searching for a responsible way to dispose of them.Adidas CEO Bjørn Gulden said in May that selling the popular sneakers and donating some of the profits was the best solution to deal with the unsold inventory and make a difference. He said the company spoke with non...Philippine ferry was overloaded when it flipped over, leaving 26 dead, official says

MANILA, Philippines (AP) — The skipper of a Philippine ferry which flipped over in a lake in an accident that killed 26 passengers decided to sail despite knowing that his boat was filled beyond capacity, the coast guard chief said Friday.Forty passengers were rescued after the M/B Aya Express capsized in Laguna de Bay on Thursday shortly after leaving Binangonan town southeast of Manila in what should have been a 30-minute cruise to nearby Talim Island, officials said.Coast guard, police and other government personnel continued to search the lake Friday but said they had no idea whether anyone was still missing because of uncertainties over the number of passengers on the ferry. No more survivors or bodies were found. Two coast guard inspectors allowed the ferry to sail after being shown a manifest which listed only 22 passengers in addition to the boat’s three-member crew, coast guard chief Admiral Artemio Abu said at a news conference. The two inspectors were removed from the...Germany used to be the world’s export powerhouse. Now, it’s not growing. What happened?

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — The German economy is still failing to grow, figures showed Friday, as the country that should be the industrial powerhouse for all of Europe struggles with high energy prices, rising borrowing costs and a lagging rebound from key trading partner China. Economic output in Germany stagnated in the April-to-June quarter, the Federal Statistics Office said. That follows a decline of 0.1% in the first three months of the year and a drop of 0.4% in the last three months of 2022 as the energy shock from Russia’s war in Ukraine echoed through Europe’s largest economy. It comes after the International Monetary Fund forecast this week that Germany would be the globe’s only major economy to shrink this year, even with weak economic growth around the world amid rising interest rates and the threat of growing inflation. In Germany, the economy has been buffeted by several challenges. Above all, its long-term dependence on Russian natural gas to fuel in...Latest news
