Movie Review: Auto pioneer Enzo Ferrari gets a solid biopic but it doesn’t make the heart race Napoleon Bonaparte. Leonard Bernstein. Willy Wonka. Aquaman — there are a ton of Guy Movie Heroes out there as 2023 ends. And yet up zooms another — in “Ferrari.”Director Michael Mann has put his stylish spotlight on yet one more stoic, brilliant and broken uber-masculine dudes, Enzo Ferrari. The movie is set during a turbulent few months in 1957 when the Italian automaker’s private and professional lives threatened to careen out of control. It’s a solid vehicle but it will leave you, well, unmoved.“Ferrari” has excellent work by Adam Driver as Ferrari, aged up two decades with grey at his temple, sunglasses clamped to his head at all times and a frosty demeanor. When we meet him, Ferrari is at a crossroads. He needs to ramp up production and sell hundreds of cars a year or risk bankrupting the company that he and his wife, Laura, have built from the ashes of world war.Enzo and Laura are still recovering from losing a son to muscular dystrophy but she doesn’t know t...

The Cowboys know they gave playoff opponents a blueprint by getting run over by the Bills

The Cowboys know they gave playoff opponents a blueprint by getting run over by the Bills The only thing that went right for the Dallas Cowboys in Buffalo came before the 31-10 loss to the Bills, when they wrapped up a third consecutive trip to the playoffs because of Atlanta losing. The most recent time the Cowboys did that, they were in a six-year postseason stretch that included three Super Bowl titles in the 1990s.Dallas knows how teams will try to prevent the club’s deepest playoff run since those days: attack the club’s run defense.Buffalo’s James Cook had 179 yards rushing, the most for one running back in a game against the Cowboys since Alfred Morris had 200 in the final game of 2012.The 266 yards rushing for the Bills were the most against Dallas since 2020, the year before defensive coordinator Dan Quinn arrived and fixed one of the worst defensive units in franchise history. For all the progress the Cowboys (10-4) have made under Quinn with turnovers and sacks, stopping the run has been a problem. With the playoffs fast approaching, the issue t...

Steelers turning to Mason Rudolph at QB in hopes of giving sputtering offense a needed spark PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers are turning to Mason Rudolph at quarterback in hopes of salvaging their season.Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that Rudolph, a six-year veteran who hasn’t started a meaningful game since 2021, will start on Saturday against Cincinnati if Kenny Pickett’s surgically repaired right ankle isn’t healthy in time.Rudolph replaces Mitch Trubisky, who struggled in losses to New England and Indianapolis while filling in for Pickett.“We’ve got a great deal of comfort with (Rudolph),” Tomlin said. “Why are we making the change, man? We don’t like what we’re looking at and the consistency of it. What I mean is we’re not scoring enough points.”Not by a long shot. The Steelers (7-7) are 28th in scoring and haven’t scored more than 18 points in each of their past five games, a stretch in which they’ve gone just 1-4 to squander the momentum generated by a somewhat surprising 6-3 start. The only win during their current slide came a...

Step by step, Francis has made the Catholic Church a more welcoming place for LGBTQ people

Step by step, Francis has made the Catholic Church a more welcoming place for LGBTQ people The Catholic Church, in its doctrine, still rejects same-sex marriage and condemns any sexual relations between gay or lesbian partners as “intrinsically disordered.” Yet Pope Francis, during his nearly 11-year papacy, has done far more than any previous pope to make the church a more welcoming place for LGBTQ+ people. It became clear early in Francis’ papacy that he was going to articulate a gentler, more tolerant approach. The initial high-profile moment came in 2013 — during the first broadcast news conference of his papacy — with his memorable “Who am I to judge” comment when he was asked about a purportedly gay priest.Signals of this approach had come earlier. As archbishop of Buenos Aires, he had favored granting legal protections to same-sex couples as an alternative to endorsing gay marriage, which Catholic doctrine forbids. The Vatican confirmed in 2020 that this was indeed the pope’s belief. Some recent highlights:In January 2023, Francis assailed the laws on the books in ma...

US says it will run out of funds for Ukraine this month The U.S. will run out of funding for Ukraine this month if Congress does not act to pass President Joe Biden’s emergency supplemental spending request that has been stalled for weeks on Capitol Hill, a top U.S. official said Monday. The Biden administration plans to announce one more package of military aid to Ukraine this month, National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Monday. But after that, funding for Ukraine will dry up, he said.“When that one is done … we will have no more replenishment authority available to us. And we’re going to need Congress to act without delay,” Kirby said. The Pentagon still has $4.4 billion in presidential drawdown authority to provide weapons to Ukraine directly from Defense Department inventory, according to Pentagon spokesperson Lt. Col. Garron Garn. But the weapons DOD can transfer to Ukraine are limited by the necessary funding to replenish U.S. stockpiles, and that’s what is almost gone.On Sunday, Pentagon Comptroller Mik...

Adobe abandons Figma takeover after Brussels, UK opposition Adobe abandoned a planned $20 billion takeover of design software rival Figma on Monday, saying there is “no clear path” to winning approval from European Union and United Kingdom merger authorities.“Despite thousands of hours spent with regulators around the world detailing differences between our businesses, our products, and the markets we serve, we no longer see a path toward regulatory approval of the deal,” Figma Chief Executive Dylan Field wrote in a blog post on Monday. The U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority had told them to sell off a key Figma unit which the companies said earlier would destroy the rationale for the deal. The European Commission issued a warning on the companies over the deal last month and company executives had also met with U.S. officials to try and save it. EU competition chief Margrethe Vestager said the deal would have terminated all current competition “and prevented all future competition between them,...
