Opinion: Blocking the Uinta Basin Railway is another injustice to the Ute Indian Tribe

Published Fri, 07 Feb 2025 18:28:53 GMT

Colorado politicians have apparently forgotten about the state’s historical second-class treatment of Native Americans and are repeating many of the same mistakes today. As Chairman of the Ute Indian Tribe Business Committee, I am shocked and disappointed by the actions of Gov. Jared Polis, U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper, and other state lawmakers that reflect disregard and contempt toward our peoples’ ancestral ties to Colorado.Ute Indians occupied what is now the state of Colorado from time immemorial. Although the federal government forced us to relocate to eastern Utah in what we today call our Uintah and Ouray Reservation, Colorado remains our ancestral homeland.Once we were forcibly relocated to the arid Uinta Basin, energy mineral production has become the main source of livelihood for our people, who would otherwise struggle to put food on the table, access education, and provide shelter for our families. The Uinta Basin Railway Project would provide much-n...

The housing market, he said, “is in a recession.”Jason Oppenheim, president of the Oppenheim Group and star of two other Netflix programs, Selling Sunset and Selling the OC, also expects to sell fewer homes this year.“This is when agents get defined — in difficult times,” he said. The nation’s second-largest city, a perennial hot spot for real estate, is wrestling with higher interest rates that make homes less affordable and a new tax that went into effect in April. The city imposes a 4% levy on properties selling for over $5 million and 5.5% on those over $10 million, with the money going to...

Only two of the dead have been identified as of Saturday. The disaster is the deadliest US wildfire in over 100 years, according to research from the National Fire Protection Association. Officials have acknowledged the death toll is likely to increase and the true scale of the casualties is unclear.
