Drew Smyly returns to the Chicago Cubs bullpen, looking to recapture success and help lead a run to the postseason

Published Sat, 08 Feb 2025 01:21:22 GMT

Drew Smyly is maintaining his humor through the disappointment of being moved back to the Chicago Cubs bullpen. The 24-year-old left-hander made three relief appearances before Marcus Stroman’s injury prompted the Cubs to return Smyly to the rotation. They saw enough in one start, a disastrous outing Tuesday in Detroit, to move Smyly back to the pen and look at other options for the fifth starter spot.“It’s like I never left, I guess,” Smyly said Friday at PNC Park. “I mean, I get it. I haven’t been doing my job as a starter, so there’s nothing I can say or any type of way I can feel about it. I wish I was doing better. I wish I had things figured out, where to go to correct it.”Manager David Ross declined to announce pregame Friday who will take Smyly’s start, which is listed as TBD for Sunday’s series finale. With three open spots on the 40-man roster, the Cubs have flexibility to add someone from Triple-A Iowa. Left-hande...

Gerrit Cole, DJ LeMahieu power Yankees past Rays in series opener

TAMPA — The last time Gerrit Cole pitched at Tropicana Field, his start went from a gem to a disaster in the blink of an eye. That came on May 7 of this year. The Yankees blew a 6-0 lead with their ace on the mound that day and ultimately lost, 8-7, in 10 innings. Cole, who had cruised through the first four frames before running into trouble in the fifth and sixth, gave up six runs, five of which were earned. The loss was one of the Yankees’ worst in a season that has since been filled with worthy candidates. But Cole has mostly been a silver lining for the last-place Yankees, and a Friday return to The Trop saw the Cy Young contender stay true to form in a 6-2 win for the Yankees. The righty lasted 7.2 innings in the series-opener while tallying four hits, two earned runs, zero walks, 11 strikeouts and 100 pitches before exiting to an ovation on the road. In doing so, Cole lowered his ERA to an even 3.00.The Rays’ first run off Cole came in the sixth when Yandy D...

Auston Matthews will be well paid to lead the Toronto Maple Leafs to a Stanley Cup championship. The question will be for the star centre is if his four-year US$53-million extension — formally signed Wednesday — will be enough to get the team over the difficult NHL playoff hump. The deal carries an average annual value of $13.25 million, which makes Matthews the league’s highest-paid player starting in 2024-25 — passing Colorado Avalanche’s star Nathan MacKinnon ($12.6M AAV).“I feel fortunate to continue this journey as a Maple Leaf in front of the best fans in hockey,” Matthews posted on X, the site formerly known as Twitter. “I will do everything I can to help us get to the top of the mountain.”Matthews said Friday it was a priority to get the deal done before training camp.“It was something I didn’t want to rush in to obviously right away,” said Matthews. “But just the whole process itself with Brad (GM Treliving) coming i...

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A jury awarded $3.75 million in damages this week to a protester shot twice with hard-foam projectiles fired by Los Angeles police during demonstrations in 2020.Jurors on Wednesday ruled that the LA Police Department was negligent when one or more of its officers fired the so-called less-lethal devices at Asim Jamal Shakir Jr., the Los Angeles Times reported.Shakir had been filming a police skirmish line when he recognized his LAPD officer uncle among the formation and confronted him, shouting, “Our ancestors are turning over in their grave right now!” Shakir alleges that his uncle, Eric Anderson, then directed other officers to fire a hard-foam projectile at him.Civil rights attorney Carl Douglas, who filed the suit on Shakir’s behalf, said he hopes the sizable damages awarded will signal that similar acts of police violence cannot be tolerated. The award must still be approved by the City Council.Karen Richardson, a spokesperson for the city attorney’s off...
