The U.S. is short more than 4 million homes: analysis

Published Fri, 27 Dec 2024 10:35:41 GMT

The U.S. is short more than 4 million homes: analysis (The Hill) – Americans seeking to move out on their own outnumbered available housing by almost two to one in 2021, according to a new report. There were roughly 8 million individuals or families who lived in another person's home in 2021 and just 3.7 million homes for rent or sale, Zillow revealed Friday, leaving a deficit of 4.3 million homes. How much apartment space does $1,500 buy in the top US cities? "The U.S. housing market is like a high-stakes version of the game musical chairs," Orphe Divounguy, senior economist at Zillow, said in a news release. "There are simply not enough homes for millions of people. Unless we address the shortage of smaller, more-affordable, starter-type homes, we risk leaving families without a seat — and it will only get worse over time,” he added. Zillow’s analysis notes that the crisis is hitting low-income families the hardest with 68% in this category sharing spaces. And the housing gap was greatest in some of the most expensive coa...

Supreme Court says states can't overrule Biden on whom to deport

Supreme Court says states can't overrule Biden on whom to deport Texas and Louisiana do not have authority to challenge the Biden administration’s guidelines for when to deport migrants from the country, the Supreme Court ruled Thursday, handing a win to President Biden on immigration policy. In an 8-1 decision, the court determined the two states lacked the standing to sue over one of the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) earliest directives.“The States essentially want the Federal Judiciary to order the Executive Branch to alter its arrest policy so as to make more arrests,” Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote for the majority.“But this Court has long held ‘that a citizen lacks standing to contest the policies of the prosecuting authority when he himself is neither prosecuted nor threatened with prosecution.’”The suit from Texas and Louisiana challenged the DHS’s immigration enforcement policies, which includes guidelines for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to prioritize certain immigrants for detention and deportation. Study: Omega-3 fatty acids tied to slowing the disease, an ‘intriguing’ link between diet and ALS Could omega-3 fatty acids be the secret to slowing down the progression of ALS in patients who face the rare neurodegenerative disease?Local researchers have found that consuming omega-3 fatty acids — particularly alpha-linolenic acid, a nutrient found in flaxseeds, walnuts, and chia, canola, and soybean oils — may help put the brakes on the progression of Lou Gehrig’s Disease.According to a new study led by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, people living with ALS who had higher levels of omega-3 fatty acids in their blood had a slower decline in physical functionality and lower risk of premature death.Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) showed the strongest link to slower disease progression, the researchers found. Those with higher levels of ALA had a 50% lower risk of dying during the 18-month study period compared to those with lower levels of ALA.Previous research had shown that a diet high in ALA and increased blood levels of this fatty acid may decrease the risk of developing...
