Vulnerabilities in Cellphone Roaming Let Spies and Criminals Track You Across the Globe

The very obscure, archaic technologies that make cellphone roaming possible also makes it possible to track phone owners across the world, according to a new investigation by the University of Toronto’s Citizen Lab. The roaming tech is riddled with security oversights that make it a ripe target for those who might want to trace the locations of phone users. As the report explains, the flexibility that made cellphones so popular in the first place is largely to blame for their near-inescapable vulnerability to unwanted location tracking: When you move away from a cellular tower owned by one company to one owned by another, your connection is handed off seamlessly, preventing any interruption to your phone call or streaming video. To accomplish this handoff, the cellular networks involved need to relay messages about who — and, crucially, precisely where — you are.“Notably, the methods available to law enforcement and intelligence services are similar to those used by the unlawful acto...Sam's No. 3 in Aurora to close by end of year

BRUSSELS — Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda hit out at Viktor Orbán for having met with Russia’s Vladimir Putin, calling out the Hungarian prime minister for flirting with Moscow just before the two men were about to sit around the same summit table.“It’s really strange to see that we start to flirt with a regime who is committing … very cruel atrocities on the territory of Ukraine,” Nausėda said as he arrived for a summit of EU leaders on Thursday. “It sends a very wrong message to … international society and also to Ukraine who is fighting for their freedom.” Orbán has been criticized by some in the EU after shaking hands with Putin at a summit in China last week, and doubling down on his continued close ties with Russia amid its invasion of Ukraine. While Budapest has signed up to the EU’s 11 rounds of sanctions on Moscow, Orbán has continually held up talks and called on the bloc to immediately stop supplying arms to Kyiv, all while ...UK Tory MP Crispin Blunt arrested on suspicion of rape

Washington, DC (CNN) — The US economy expanded at a remarkably strong pace in the third quarter, despite interest rates at their highest level in 22 years.Gross domestic product, a measure of all goods and services produced in the economy, grew at an annualized 4.9% rate in the third quarter, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. GDP is adjusted for inflation and seasonal swings. That’s well above the second quarter’s 2.1% pace and faster than economists’ expectations of a 4.3% rate.Robust consumer spending fueled growth in the third quarter, a sign of the economy’s surprising resilience in the face of tougher borrowing costs and persistently high inflation. Spending grew from July through September by an annualized rate of 4%, its strongest pace since the fourth quarter of 2021. Americans splurged both on goods and services.Indeed, packed Taylor Swift and Beyoncé concerts and record tickets sales for the “Barbie” film were a hallmark of this year’s...Israel conducts raid in Gaza as Netanyahu says ground incursion will come
