Pentagon’s Budget Is So Bloated That It Needs an AI Program to Navigate It

As tech luminaries like Elon Musk issue solemn warnings about artificial intelligence’s threat of “civilizational destruction,” the U.S. military is using it for a decidedly more mundane purpose: understanding its sprawling $816.7 billion budget and figuring out its own policies. Thanks to its bloat and political wrangling, the annual Department of Defense budget legislation includes hundreds of revisions and limitations telling the Pentagon what it can and cannot do. To make sense of all those provisions, the Pentagon created an AI program, codenamed GAMECHANGER. “In my comptroller role, I am, of course, the most excited about applying GAMECHANGER to gain better visibility and understanding across our various budget exhibits,” said Gregory Little, the deputy comptroller of the Pentagon, shortly after the program’s creation last year. “The fact that they have to go to such extraordinary measures to understand what their own policies are is an indictment of how they operate....UK leader Rishi Sunak delays ban on new gas and diesel cars by 5 years, in contentious retreat on climate measures

BEREA, Ohio (AP) — Kareem Hunt ran right back to the Browns.Desperate to find a quality running back after losing star Nick Chubb for the season, the Browns have reunited with Hunt, who was available as a free agent and is expected to be able to help Cleveland’s offense immediately. The team is giving Hunt a one-year deal worth up to $4 million, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press. Hunt’s deal includes numerous incentives, said the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the team is not making the terms public.A Cleveland-area native, Hunt spent four seasons with the Browns before the team decided not to re-sign him this offseason. His departure came following a turbulent 2022 during which he asked for a new contract and to be traded.Because he already knows the system, the 28-year-old Hunt can step right in and likely will play Sunday when the Browns (1-1) host the Tennessee Titans (1-1).Hunt will back up Jerome Ford, wh...At Security Council, Ukraine leader accuses Russia of “criminal and unprovoked aggression” that violates U.N. YEREVAN, Armenia — A military vehicle carrying Russian peacekeepers came under fire and its crew was killed as Azerbaijan stepped up its attacks on the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh, Moscow confirmed Wednesday. In a statement released by the Ministry of Defense, officials said that the patrol was hit near the village of Dzhanyatag. “A car with Russian servicemen came under small arms fire. As a result of the shelling, the Russian servicemen in the vehicle were killed,” the message reads. The number of dead was not disclosed. German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the number of migrants coming to the country had pushed it to “breaking point,” as he called for a fairer European system of migrant distribution.“Germany, like Italy, is at the limit of its capacity,” Steinmeier said in an interview with Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera on Wednesday ahead of a visit to Italy. “Italy and Germany have heavy loads to bear,” he said, adding that “Germany has already accepted more than 1,000 refugees from Italy within the previous voluntary solidarity mechanism, more than any other European state. In the negotiations on the common European asylum system, a permanent solidarity mechanism” should also be created “so that it does not remain solely with this voluntary system.”“In the first half of this year alone, 162,000 people applied for asylum in Germany — more than a third of all applications within the EU,” Steinmeier sai...Kraft recalls faulty American cheese singles

New York (CNN) — Kraft Heinz is recalling about 83,000 cases of its individually wrapped Kraft Singles American cheese because they might pose a choking hazard. The company said in a statement that a “temporary issue” with one of its wrapping machines means a “thin strip of the individual film may remain on the slice after the wrapper has been removed.” If that isn’t removed, it could be “unpleasant and potentially cause a gagging or choking hazard.”Kraft said that it issued a recall after “several” customer complaints of finding the piece of plastic on its cheese, including six complaints from eaters that choked or gagged on it. No injuries or health issues have been reported and the faulty machine has since been fixed. The issue affects two types of packing, including 16-ounce “Kraft Singles American Pasteurized Prepared Cheese Product” with a “Best When Used By” date between January 10, 2024, and January 27, 2024. Individual packages in this recall contain ...Archeologists discover 2,000-year-old child’s shoe with laces intact

(CNN) — A shoe belonging to a child and dating back more than 2,000 years has been unearthed in Austria with its laces still intact. The design of the leather shoe, whose size roughly corresponds to EU 30 (US 12), suggests it was likely made in the 2nd century BC, according to the German Mining Museum Bochum-Leibniz Research Museum for Geo-resources.The shoe was excavated by archeologists in the western village of Dürrnberg, where rock salt mining took place from as early as the Iron Age, it said in a recent press release. The salt, which is particularly good at preserving organic remains, is thought to have kept the shoe in extremely good condition.“Our research activities at Dürrnberg have been providing us with valuable finds for decades in order to scientifically explore the earliest mining activities. The condition of the shoe found is outstanding,” Professor Thomas Stoellner, head of the Research Department at the German Mining Museum, said in the press release.Excavation w...Latest news
